The palatal expansion appliance corrects a lack of width in the upper jaw. The appliance can be used from the age of 7 (when the first permanent molars are in the mouth) through adolescence. When necessary, palatal expansion should be performed before the end of the active growth period, otherwise, it should be performed in combination with maxillofacial surgery.
