Ortho-surgery
Jaw misalignment can be corrected with braces during the active growth period. However, if the misalignment is too great, or if the patient is no longer in the growth period (adult patient), orthognathic surgery may be necessary.
Orthognathic surgery is jawbone surgery performed by a maxillo-facial surgeon. It is usually performed in combination with orthodontic treatment. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and requires a few days’ hospitalization.
Orthognathic surgery involves certain normal risks inherent in any surgical procedure. Your maxillo-facial surgeon will explain all the details of the procedure, the risks and benefits, and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
In Quebec, most major jaw surgeries are covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
