Occasionally, parts of your braces may break or come loose during orthodontic treatment. These breakages usually have no serious consequences, but it’s important to let us know so we can correct the problem. You can consult the following section for advice while you wait for your appointment with us.<\/p>\n

The components<\/h2>\n

There are different parts to your braces. Here is a brief description of each part of your braces.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Bracket<\/h4>\n

An attachment bonded to the tooth surface.<\/p>\n

Wire<\/h4>\n

The wire is held in place by self-ligating gates.<\/p>\n

Elastic ligature<\/h4>\n

Elastic ring around the case to add color. Its purpose is purely aesthetic.<\/p>\n

Hook<\/h4>\n

Post on box used to hang rubber bands.<\/p>\n

Band<\/h4>\n

Metal ring bonded around a tooth.<\/p>\n

Elastic chain<\/h4>\n

Elastic rings linked together to close gaps.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n

Wire out of bracket<\/h4>\n

Please contact us to schedule a clinic visit to replace the wire. If the wire hurts, you can stabilize it using wax.<\/p>\n

Broken elastic chain<\/h4>\n

If the elastic chain is split in two or completely detached from the last tooth, it is important to come to the clinic to have a new chain installed. However, if the elastic chain is not completely broken and is holding in place, there’s no need to come to the clinic unless it causes discomfort.<\/p>\n

Broken wire<\/h4>\n

You can cut off the excess thread with a disinfected tool or nail clipper and remove the cut section. Please contact us to schedule a clinic visit to replace the wire.<\/p>\n

Debonded bracket<\/h4>\n

If the bracket is no longer in the mouth, please keep it and bring it back to the clinic for reattachment. If the box is still in the mouth and hurts, you can stabilize it using wax. Please contact us to schedule a visit to the clinic to reattach it as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

Poking wire<\/h4>\n

You can apply wax as demonstrated by your dental hygienist.
